On my original A77 I used single spot AF local 99 of the time. Now you can use the Control Wheel to quickly adjust the Zone or Flexible Spot AF point.
It is very intuitive simply focus on something and leave your finger halfway depressed and the camera will hang on to the subject even as it moves around the frame waiting for you to release the shutter.

Expand Flexible Spot takes Flexible Spot M but it allows the camera to try to help. Like other Sony cameras the a7 offers an array of focusing areas. Out of the two Ive found this focus area to work well on my Sony A7iii. The A77ii now has the name flexible spot rather than local I. This allows quick access to this important setting to change between Wide Zone Flexible Spot or Flexible Spot Lock focus modes.

It uses a small flexible spot and additional points around it to improve accuracy and speed if the camera cannot focus with the central point. As an added bonus this setting also works with manual focus assist. Im interested in opinions on which flexible spot focusing setting is best on the A7A7R.

For most scenarios a single focus area will be more than enough. Sony Autofocus Points. I tend to use the Expand Flexible Spot setting which I found the most reliable but a Medium or large Flexible Spot will do fine as well.
My technique is to use DMF with focus and recompose with the A7R and have the AEL wshutter set to off so the camera is redetermining exposure as I recompose with shutter half pressed. Sony A7 III A7R III A9 for Landscape.
