Max Noi Mach/Unchained - Split 7″
Max Noi Mach [website] did two shows in Belgium last week (Live in De Living, in Tienen and at Nepomuk, in Brussels - I attended both of them) and a live-set on FM-Brussels [website] during Implosief [webpage] - You can still listen to the radioshow till the end of this week, which I’m doing right now. Or right-click the previous link and save to your HD [Update: okay, won’t work, it’s streaming audio, but I’m sure you kids out there know how to store this on your HD’s anyhow.]. If you don’t hear Max Noi Mach, you’re too late for the show (it’s only online for one week), but you’ll learn something interesting on Belgian radio-culture.
Ozonokids [website, click “welcome”] recently released a split 7″ featuring Max Noi Mach and Unchained [website] - fyi: both bands toured Europe in june 2006 together, and they did De Living during that tour [review]. Ozonokids gives a fairly good description of what you can expect to find on the vinyl it released (check their catalogue) - The Max Noi mach-side, appropriately called “Slowned” is pretty different from both the One Deep 10″ (higly recommended!) and the tape he released on Bread and Animals (highly recommended as well and considered by Max Noi Mach as his best!) - on this split 7″ Max Noi Mach’s DR770 beats are quite recognisable: distorted ‘n dirty, but the tempo is really slow ‘n lazy - Comes close to a distorted TR606-sound by moments. The Unchained-side is pretty surprising as well. I got to know him during their 2006-tour as a guitar-wizz, an impression that was reinforced by some of his releases that I heard later on (including The Cardinal Cage CDr). The first track (”Star Time”) on the Unchained side reminds me a lot of some old-school harsh-noise records that are at my place, K2, but with a turntable: fast scratching, switches, stops ‘n goes. The Ozonokids mention feedback, voice and guitar as main sound-sources. Track 2 is more in line with the other releases that I heard of him, but this track two is among the finest he did so far: a more guitaresk sound, saturating and morphing - There should be an mp3 available for download on the Ozonokids-website, but when I checked it had been taken down. Maybe you’re more lucky. Otherwise check mySpace for Unchained, pretty sure he’ll have a couple of soundbits online over there.
